Reiki
Reiki is a hands-on energy healing method that gently works with the body’s natural ability to heal itself. An ancient healing method, rediscovered in Japan, Reiki increases the flow of energy around the body to promote wellbeing, ease emotional dysregulation, provide relief from pain and bring the mind and body into balance.

Reiki works holistically to provide relief from symptoms of stress, reducing heart rate and increasing polyvagal activity. Reiki effectively calms the mind bringing similar benefits to that of deep meditation. Increasingly being used to support patients in hospitals, it is an incredibly soothing treatment that can help with physical and emotional conditions on all levels.

Reiki is a safe treatment for all individuals at every life stage. It is however, particularly wonderful for pregnancy and the postnatal period. Perfect for deep relaxation and rest, it can even be done seated with babe in arms.

Reiki and Me
I have been a Usui Reiki practitioner for 11 years, completing my training in 2011 with Sarah Lownds at Sarpenela. My journey with Reiki began a few years before, as a result of falling ill with ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome whilst at university.

People sometimes describe their first encounters with Reiki as life changing and mine was no different. ME can be a debilitating illness and I was deeply unwell when I went for my first ever treatment. The experience was extraordinary, I felt a strong warm heat all over my body accompanied by a huge emotional release, I remember feeling cold and shaky for the rest of the day and had to go to bed with a colossal headache. The next day the constant pain, fatigue and other symptoms I’d been suffering with had most definitely lifted.

I began to go regularly, luckily the ‘healing crisis’ only happened the once! I was amazed by how one hour of Reiki could make such a difference to my wellbeing; easing pain, leaving me feeling refreshed and calming anxiety.

It was 3 years later that I decided to take my first Reiki Degree. I am attuned to Usui Reiki, directly able to follow my teachers back to the source. It was Dr Mikao Usui who rediscovered Reiki in Japan in the late 1800’s after studying ancient Tibetan texts in search of a lost healing art. My second Degree quickly followed, enabling me to be a full practitioner.

I am ever grateful to the gift of Reiki and the role it’s played in my personal life. I have used it in many ways, on family members, friends and animals and am still particularly in awe of its profound calming and centring effect.
